Additional Details

The United Foreign Mission Society established a small mission school on the outskirts of the Seneca reservation, staffed by a superintendant, an assistant, and two female teachers. In 1821, Thompson S. Harris arrived as the new superintendant, and soon came into conflict with one of the teachers, Miss Van Patten. Though in poor health, she was asked to do extensive housework in addition to her teaching duties. She prepared this testimony in response to formal charges filed by Thompson--leaving us with fourteen pages of detailed descriptions of mission life.
